This has become a recurring joke, but in real life (and maybe in The Earth Republic too), they’re pretty thorough at making sure no one’s getting married just to get citizenship. To the point where real couples have a really hard time doing what should be a normal thing (getting married and getting to live in the same place).

Panel 1: Maida: "Ugh! Why are things so terrible everywhere?" Khadija picks up Daisy the cat as she walks by. Khadija: "If you fink a quickie marriage would 'elp, I'm sure Zaynab wouldn't mind volunteering. Right, Zay-zay?"
Panel 2: Zaynab is blushing with embarrassment. Zaynab: "Khadija!! I- I mean I'm sure it won't come to that." Khadija kisses Daisy on her head.
Panel 3: She turns to Maida. Zaynab: "Right?"
Panel 4: Daisy escapes, hissing. Khadija: "Oh, Zay! We're both of us fractions, innit? Eivver of us marrying Maida wouldn't 'elp her none."
Panel 5: Khadija: "No, she'd have to marry one of my famously much more successful and extremely single brovvers."
Panel 6" Maida laughs, but Zaynab crosses her arms to make a big "X." Zaynab: "Absolutely not! I forbid it forever!"
