Once again I am here to tell you that I wrote this scene in 2017. It’s relevant now because it’s been relevant this whole time. What I did have to do this year is RE-write it, to make it clear that the kind of deportations Maida’s friends are talking about are not ICE gestapo tactics, where masked, unidentified thugs grab you off the street on sight and either put you in a concentration camp or just kill you. The kind of deportations they’re talking about are the kind that, for example, the Canadian government has planned with the new Bill C-12, which will be much quieter, POLITE, and bureaucratic, whereby thousands of people are simply denied the right to continue to live their lives as they’ve planned to, and compelled to return to countries where they have much dimmer prospects. If you haven’t heard about what’s going on with immigration in Canada, I’m not surprised. Smart regimes are quieter with their cruelty, so they can get away with it for longer, and keep their scapegoats sufficiently scapegoatted.
